Quickstart
Set up Stenny with Claude Code and record your first lecture.
You need a Mac with an Apple chip (M1 or newer) and about 3 GB of free space. Open the Apple menu › About This Mac. If it says Chip: Apple M…, Stenny runs. If it says Processor: Intel, it doesn't. See all requirements.
Set up with Claude Code
Claude Code downloads Stenny, follows its setup guide and does each step with you. You only answer a few questions and click Allow.

Copy this sentence
Claude Code
Install Stenny on my Mac by following https://github.com/hendrikboettcher/stenny/blob/main/SETUP.md
-
Paste it into Claude Code
Use the Code tab in the Claude desktop app, or type
claudein the Terminal. Claude Code puts Stenny in~/Applications/stenny, installs uv and ffmpeg, builds the menu bar app, and asks for your vault, your calendar and your courses. -
Allow access
When Stenny starts for the first time, allow access to your microphone and your calendars.
You can also download Stenny.zip, unzip it, open the folder in Claude Code and type follow SETUP.md. Or view it on GitHub.
Prefer to do it yourself? Follow the installation guide.
Record your first lecture
-
Ask the lecturer
Many universities, WU Vienna for example, need the lecturer's consent before you record. Keep recordings and transcripts to yourself.
-
Start recording
Ten minutes before the lecture, a notification asks Record this lecture? Click Start Recording. You can also open the menu bar and choose Start Lecture, then the course.
-
Follow along
The menu bar shows a red dot and the running time. Choose Open Transcript in Obsidian to read the live draft.
-
Stop
Choose Stop & Make Final Transcript. When your Mac is plugged in, the final transcript of a three-hour lecture is ready after about 20 to 25 minutes.
Next steps
- Studying with Claude: let your course's Claude project read the transcripts.
- Microphones: use your iPhone closer to the lecturer.
- Slides: add the lecture slides for better spelling and slide links.
